will /wɪl/

modal v. 将要；愿意，要 n. 意愿；遗嘱
用：will作情态动词：1. 表示意愿或决心：I will do my best to help you. 我愿意尽全力帮助你。 2. 表示习惯或规律：Fish will die out of water. 鱼儿离开水就会死。
例：Maggie had the will to finish her degree in four years. 麦吉希望能在四年内取得学位。

promote /prə'məʊt/

vt. 促进；提升；推销
例：All our projects aim to promote the development of poor and remote communities. 我们所有的项目都旨在促进贫困和偏远社区的发展。(2019年北京卷) // The company has employed several pretty girls to promote their goods. 公司雇佣了几个漂亮女孩来推销商品。

settle /'setl/

vi. 安家，定居 vt. 解决(问题)
例：They helped the rare bird settle in Kent. 他们帮助这种稀有的鸟在肯特郡安家。
用：1. settle for sth. 勉强认可某事(物) 2. settle down 定居
补：settled(adj. 固定的)；settler(n. 移民者；殖民者)；settlement(n. 定居；解决；安置)

explanation /,eksplə'neɪʃn/

n. 解释，说明
例：The most likely explanation for Jack’s absence was that his car had been delayed by traffic. 杰克缺席最可能的原因是他遇到了交通阻塞。

date /deɪt/

n. 日期；约会 vt. 约会；注明日期
例：Most of the young people don’t know the exact date of their parents’ births. 大多数年轻人不知道父母的生日是哪一天。
用：1. out of date 过时的 2. up to date 最新的；最近的
辨：date, day
date指具体的日期(年、月、日)，一般用单数；day泛指“日子”，a day指“一天”。用date提问，问的是“几月几号”。用day提问，问的是“星期几”。date from = date back to 意为“始于，追溯到”，常用一般现在时且无被动语态。

howl /haʊl/

v. (狼、狗)嚎叫；(因痛苦、悲伤而)哀号
例：The dog was howling in the yard. 狗在院子里嚎叫。

match /mætʃ/

v. 比得上；(和···)相似；(和···)相配；配对 n. 比赛；火柴

n. (正式的)会议

例：We floated the idea to my mum of sharing a house. 我们向母亲提出了关于合住的想法。(2020年全国卷3) // The boat floated down the river. 小船顺流而下。

n. 邻居(美neighbor)
例：As is well known, the Moon is the Earth’s nearest neighbour. 众所周知，月球是地球最近的邻居。
